Cartersville, Georgia

Project Overview
The City of Cartersville was established in 1850 in anticipation of the construction of the Western & Atlantic Railroad through the Etowah Valley. Nicknamed Georgia’s “Museum City” it’s the home of many museums, and to the first outdoor painted wall advertisement for Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, painted in 1894.

Cartersville has grown to cover an area of approximately 35 square miles and its fire department has 4 stations protecting the city. The #3 station was a relocation from an older building to a new site. The larger station houses trucks, engines, equipment, and the crew, who are always at the ready should they be needed.

Challenge
The new fire station had been slated for terrazzo throughout the living quarters, which was going to be very expensive. The bays needed a floor covering that could take the impact of heavy brass fittings and hoses on an ongoing basis and needed the compressive strength to handle trucks weighing 10 – 30 tons.

The city was open to any savings that could be offered during the build while still meeting the needs of the crew.

Solution
As a cost saving measure for the living quarters, Res-Tek suggested a MAC-GuardTM system with a custom colored flake blend to simulate the look of terrazzo without the expense. It would be durable, stain resistant, and easy to repair if needed.

In the bay, a power troweled epoxy system was chosen that would hold up to the impact of the hoses and brass fittings along with chemicals and automotive fluids. This power troweled epoxy system has over 12,000 psi for compressive strength and was finished with a high-traffic urethane with very high abrasion resistance.

The driving lanes were marked in safety red with walkways in gray for easy visibility, helping keep both crew and potential visitors safe while in the station.
