Kroger On the Rhine Eatery

Project Overview
Food halls are popping up all over the country, allowing unique venues to house multiple restaurant options within one location. The Kroger On the Rhine Eatery is located above a Kroger grocery store just one block from The Kroger Co. headquarters, and has five dining options. It is truly a one-of-a-kind shopping experience in Kroger’s hometown of Cincinnati and services several neighborhoods in the community.

Challenge
Shortly after opening, it became clear that the lively outdoor patio didn’t match the aesthetic of the interior space.

Budgeted for plain sidewalk concrete, it was porous and had become stained in just a few months. It needed a coating to improve the look as well as to protect the concrete.

“Our patio area has a concrete substrate, and despite being reassured it was sealed, we were constantly battling stains from food and drink spills”, said Nick Poulos, General Manager of Events and Operations.

Solution
Patterson Floors, a Res-Tek certified applicator, recommended Res-Tek’s DEK-Guard™ outdoor coating system. Based on methyl-methacrylate (MMA) chemistry, DEK-Guard would be stain-resistant, UV stable to avoid yellowing, and cure quickly to keep patio downtime to a minimum.

The flexible membrane included in this system would also allow for any movement in the patio area, preventing cracks from telegraphing through the surface.

“We needed a coating that would hold up to the routine challenges that every dining area faces,” Nick said.

“Res-Tek set us up with a coating system and a certified installer who understood our situation as well as our need to have the project completed quickly. We are very happy with the end results. The patio looks inviting to our guests and is much easier to keep clean.”
